The cover was illustrated by the "social realist" painter Robert Gwathmey (1903 - 1988).

Gwathmey studied business at the North Carolina State College in Raleigh. He was unsure of his career prospects and took a job after college on a freighter. Later he attended the Maryland Institute of Design and finally the Pennsylvania Academy of The Fine Arts. in 1929 and 1930 Gwathmey was awarded the Cresson Traveling Scholarship, which gave him the opportunity to study abroad. He traveled to Paris, Madrid, Barcelona, Genoa, Pisa, Florence, Venice, Vienna, Munich and London.

After graduating from school, Gwathmey taught at several colleges including: Temple University in Philadelphia, Beaver College in Glenside, Carnegie Institute of Technology in Pittsburgh, The cooper Union School of Art, NYC, The New School for Social Research, NYC and finally Boston University.

Gwathmey was an activist in several political movements and was reportedly included on an FBI watch list for the last twenty-seven years of his life.

When asked about being a "social artist" he replied: "I'm a social being and I don't see how you can be an artist and be separate . . Artists have eyes . . . You go home. You see things that are almost forgotten. It's always shocking."
