The origin of Baker’s Plays dates almost as far back as the foundation of Samuel French. Baker’s predecessor, the Herbert Sweet Company, published and sold plays in Boston from 1845-1872. When the great Boston Fire of 1872 destroyed many of the company’s printing plates and other material, it moved into the newly rebuilt district and continued operation under the name of George M Baker & Company. George Baker was a playwright himself, and had written a number of plays and farces specifically for the amateur market that were extremely popular during the time. Walter Baker, brother of George, took over the company in 1892, and Baker’s Plays was officially incorporated in 1921. Click here to learn more about "Baker's Plays" and the "Samuel French" company.
