Early photograph measures approximately 12 x 15 inches, including mat. The signature in the lower left is unclear. As best as I can make out it reads: Smales - Tiverton (?) R.I. I imagine "Smales" is the name of the photographer. Unfortunately I don't know the date or origins of the photograph though it appears to be from the early 20th century.
I did some research on the "Smales" name in Rhode Island and identified a man named Holbert T. Smales. I'm not sure if he is indeed the person associated with this photograph but his is the most likely association I could identify online.
Holbert T. Smales was born in 1897 and according to the 1940 US Census report, Mr. Smales lived in Middletown, RI with his wife Adeline, son Robert T. and daughter Alice E. Smales.
Smales was the director of the Newport Rhode Island Preservation Society in 1964 When the "Breakers" was opened to the public. He prepared a book, "The Breakers Newport, Rhode Island An Illustrated Handbook." published by the Society in 1950.
It also appears Smales served as the Vice-Principal and Head of the Vocational Department at Rogers, De La Salle Academy in Newport, RI on or around 1958.
Condition: Photo is in good sharp condition though likely with some discoloration. The mat is worn on the edges with two damaged corners. (see pics)
