Whitman Publishing Company was a subsidiary of Western Printing and Lithographing Company. "Western" was originally formed in 1910 when two brothers, Edward Henry and Albert H. Wadewitz purchased the struggling Chicago based, "Racine's West Side Printing Company" for $2,504 and changed the name. The brothers later acquired the Hammerung-Whitman Publishing Co. which became a subsidiary of Western.
By the late 1970s, Western was one of the largest commercial printers in the US. Their enterprise included four manufacturing plants and two distribution centers. The company boasted of installing some of the first heatset web offset printing press in the US.
Western produced the original "Big Little" Books, Golden Books and many book titles licensed from popular movies and television series. In addition to producing children's books, Western printed paperback books, coin collecting ephemera, puzzles, games and magazines. At one time, Western reportedly printed everything from business cards to billboards and employed over 2,500 full-time people. The company also incorporated a large "Games Division" and were the primary producers and distributors of Trivial Pursuit and Pictionary. Their games division was later sold to Hasbro.
Mattel acquired Western in 1979 and sold it to private investors in 1984. In 1996 the company was renamed "Golden Books Family Entertainment" and narrowed it's focus to concentrate on children's books. in 2001 Golden Books Family Entertainment was acquired by Classic Media, Inc. and Random House in a bankruptcy auction, with "Classic" gaining rights to Golden's film and Television library as well as licensing rights for Golden's characters, while Random House grabbed Golden's publishing rights. In July of 2012 Classic Media was purchased by DreamWorks Animation for $155 million dollars.
